One of the most popular cruise destinations in the world for British tourists is the Canary Islands, and it is one of the best ways to see them. Many cruises will stop at Majorca first at the main ferry terminal in Palma before heading onto Las Palma (Gran Canaria), and then go on to Santa Cruz (Tenerife) as well as stopping at a number of other ports. You can check for cruise deals at Thomsons and First Choice.
Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria is the capital of the Canary Islands. The city is delightful, and you can stroll through the beautiful gardens of the Ciudad Jardin, and the old quarter of Vegueta where Christopher Columbus stopped on his 1492 voyage.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, and has the highest population of all of them also. The island’s rugged looks were sculpted from successive volcanic eruptions throughout its history. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island’s capital as well as being its main port.
Beaches around Tenerife are all very different from each other, there are traditional beach resorts, and beaches that are part of the cities, beaches with beautiful golden sands, and beaches with black sands (a consequence of the eruption of the Teide volcano). Such a wealth of different beaches attracts many visitors every year, and here there are plenty of places to stay no matter what sort of holiday you are looking for.
One excursion worth taking whether you visit via cruise ship or traditional holiday, is a trip to Mount Teide National Park. Here you can see some of most impressive of Tenerife’s volcanic landscape which many say looks more like something you might see on the moon than here on earth. You can even take a cable car ride right up to the craters rim.
In Santa Cruz there is much to see, the port has grown from a small fishing village into a city full of classy bars and restaurants, shops, fine architecture and interesting museums.
The Plaza de Espana at the heart of the ports main shopping area is a café lined boulevard where you can sit and enjoy watching the bustle of the city. There’s also the Museo de Bellas Artes, where you can see many fine art pieces including works by Bruegel, and the Museo de la Naturaleza y El Hombre where you can discover more about the islands history, flora, fauna and topography.
Whatever your choice, you’ll find lots to see and do here, and this friendly location is one which invites people to return time and time again.
