Deia (Deya) Majorca (Mallorca) is a quaint small village of small rock houses in the northern part of this Spanish Mediterranean island. Construction is controlled here in order to maintain the natural charm and protect the environment. Deia dates back to the prehistoric era. It takes its name from the Arabic word “ad daia” meaning “hamlet”. During the Islamic days of the 10th through 13th centuries, they constructed a very sophisticated system for irrigation which the locals still use. They also used terraces which are like large stairs going up and down the mountain to create cultivable fields. When the Christians conquered Majorca in the 13th century, they built various monasteries. In 1526 Deia gained its independence.
The economy is based not only on tourism but also remains concentrating on agriculture including orange and olive trees and the production of olive oil as well as fishing, hand crafts, and fine arts. Deia is conveniently located only 40 minutes from the Palma Airport.
Deia got its big boost when the English novelist, poet, and scholar, Robert Graves, discovered its charm in 1946 and later settled in the village as one of its first foreigners. Using the town and beautiful countryside as the setting for many of his stories, including “Hercules My Shipmate” (a historical novel), he brought fame to the area. His house is currently a museum. There are also a variety of other museums to explore.
Many major authors have visited Deia and have used it in their short stories. Later rock and roll stars took over including Richard Branson of Virgin Records who owns a luxury residence there. His label’s stars have visited often and sometimes will “jam” at the local bar Sa Fonda. Other musicians who have made Deia their home include Mick Jagger. Deia has become a place of inspiration for these artists.
As small as it is with less than 1,000 local inhabitants, Deia boasts about twenty popular restaurants and bars that are enjoyed by international visitors.
A charming place to stay in Deia is the five-star luxury hotel La Residencia de Deia. Two 16th and 17th century manor houses are furnished in a comfortable style and overlook beautiful flower, fruit, and herb gardens. Some of the suites have a private pool, terrace, or private garden.
